Though returns on sandalwood cultivation are very high in which naturally grown sandalwood tree takes 30 years to be ready for harvesting whereas intensive cultivation through organic methods gives quick results in 10 to 15 years.
Growing sandalwood by individuals was banned until 2002. Today, we can grow the trees but it is illegal to cut and harvest the wood by themselves and sell in open market. The forests department / KSDL / KSHDC will harvest the sandal wood after maturity. The land owner will be paid the amount after the action sale as per the rules.
According to IWST estimates, the cost of sandalwood cultivation per hectare is about Rs 30 lakh for the entire crop cycle, but the returns vary from Rs 1.2 crore to Rs 1.5 crore depending upon the quality of wood IWST recommends a 15-year harvest cycle of sandalwood for maximum benefit.
